Take Action, Sep 30, 2007

4 ways to take action as a christian

1. On what God tells you to do
4 miracles that involve both God and man:
    1)Paralytic is healed (Mark 2:1-12)
       – invite Jesus into my home
       – have friends that share faith
       – be open with God – He sees everything about me anyway
       – God wants to speak to me, even in my everyday life
       – the man that was healed had to take action
    2) Turning water to wine (John 2:1-11)
       – man cooperated in the miracle
       – if I want a miracle, I have to take action on what Jesus says
    3) Man with an infirmity for 38 years is healed (John 5:1-9)
    4) Withered hand is healed (Luke 6:8-11)
       – it’s terrible when “religious people” get enraged at Jesus working
       – got to give God something to work with
       – God inhabits in our praise

2. Flee and don’t look back (Gen. 19:1-17)
  – Lot hesitated and the angels grabbed them and lead them out. Angels will help me flee
  – Isa. 43:18 it’s time to put the past behind me
  – God will make a new way
  – I don’t need to end up in the right place going in the wrong direction
  – 1 Cor 15:33 change my associations “Bad company corrupts good character”
  – we as people would rather be miserable than take action to change

3. Stop believing the lies of the world
  – lies like “You can do it all, you can have it all”
  – stop believing that I can have it all and be happy and enjoy what God’s given me now.
  – that affair is going to bring hell in my life, not heaven
  – 4 lies that people believe:
      1) Performance trap (I have to meed these standards) The Truth: Justification
      2) Approval addiction (fear of rejection, pleasing others at any cost, hypersensitive to criticism, won’t volunteer because I’m afraid of making mistakes, letting others control my actions and thoughts) The Truth: Reconciliation
      3) Blame game (confessing the same sin over and over again even thought I’ve already been fogiven) The Truth: Propitiation
      4) Shame (can’t accept what I’ve been given by God because I don’t deserve it) The Truth: Regeneration

4. Stop comparing myself to others
  – Stop it! Just stop it!
  – we decieve ourselves by comparing ourselves to others. God created me to be unique.

Finding Rest For Your Soul Pt 3, Sep. 23, 2007

Hebrews 3-4

1. Worries and cares of this world can choke out God. So if I’m to have a sense of rest, I need to fix my eyes on God and take on His perspective.

2. Hold fast to confidence and hope (confident expectation)
  – not only is God in my hands, but I’m in God’s hands

3. Learning to hear the voice of God (v.7)
  – some things are only said by God in the mornings
  – some things are only said by God in the evenings
  – it takes time and training to hear God’s voice

4. Don’t harden my heart (v.8)
  – I have to pay attention to my heart
  – don’t hold disappointment

5. I must become familiar with God’s ways
  – pray for my enemies
  – God’s ways are not your ways (Isa. 55:8)
  – when I’m upset, start singing and worship. Just sit and wait on God.

6. I must become aware/alert of annoyances and hardships (v.12-13)
  – joysuckers are people that suck the joy out of me
  – be aweare of the subtlety of unbelief
 – be aware of my faith getting a little bit weak

7. Obedience (v.18, 4:11)
  – if I don’t obey God, I won’t enter into His rest

8. Faith (4:2)

9. Come boldly to the throne of grace (4.16)

Finding Rest For Your Soul Pt 2, Sep. 16, 2007

Hebrews 3-4

– I need a will that’s subjected to God so I can find peace for my soul
-Emotions: I find rest in Jesus

Ingredients:

* Partake of salvation (fix my eyes on Jesus) (3:1)
  – take every thought captive

* Hold fast to confidence (v.6)
  – the enemy lives to dis-courage me so it’s important to have and be an en-couragement

* Hold fast to rejoicing and hope (anchored in hope)
  – if I feel like I’m in a free fall, go ahead and let go because God will catch me in His hands.

* Learn to hear His voice (v.7, 15)
  – God has thoughts for me. Ps.139

* Do not harden my heart or become stubborn (v.8)
  – from people offending me or rude
  – signs of a hardened heart: if I’m critical, hyper-sensitive, controlling, or can’t take correction
  – don’t test God (like saying, “God, if You’re real, than do this…”
  – don’t go astray (it’s easy to wander away with the next new fad)

* Become familiar with God’s ways (v.10; Prov. 14:10)

The Good vs God’s Best, Sep. 2, 2007

John 2:1-4

3 factors to convert what is good to what is best

1. Crisis factor (v. 3)
  – when they ran out of wine.
  – the back of a mustard bottle says “Shake before use” and sometimes God shakes things up before he uses us.
  3 constants in life:
    1- God
    2- Anything alive will die
    3- Change
  – when we’re satisfied with the way things are, we’re disqualified for God’s best
  – when crisis comes, run to Jesus

2. Time factor (v. 4)
  3 questions:
1- does Scripture allow or prohibit it?
    2- who gets the glory?
3- is it the right time?

3. Obedience factor (v. 5-7)
