Cultivating A Thankful Life, Nov 25, 2007

Cultivating A Thankful Life
Psalms 92
Give thanks to God (v. 1-2)
– thankful in the morning
– thankful in the evening
– thankful at night

Thanks glorifies God (Ps. 50:23) and aligns my life with God and I become sensitive to the voice of God.
Ps. 105:1-2, Ps. 107:1-2 – because His mercy endures forever
1 Thess. 5:16-18 – rejoice always, pray always, and in everything give thanks – this is God’s will for my life.

Why give thanks?
1- It honors God
2- It refocuses our attention
3- It releases me from anxiety (Phil. 4:6-7)
4- It refreshes our relationship with Him
5- It reinforces our faith

How to express thanks
1- Say “thank you” to God (ex. thank you for my car, thank you for my spouse, etc.)
2- Singing thanksgiving to God
3- Living a godly life
4- Praising God in public (being salt and light)
5- Giving generously – not just with money, but also with my life and love, even when it’s not convenient

Benefits of being thankful
– strong families express appreciation for each other.
Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” William Arthur Ward

Appreciation…
– is the great multiplier
– is the great awakener
– is the great problem solver – changes my outlook on life and problems
– is the great revitalizer – dissolves fear and resentment

Gratitude creates a loving heart

Enemies that destroy
– ingratitude
– gossip
– being a depreciator ( not an appreciator)

Gratitude and appreciation serve as powerful vehicles to increase the flow of love into any relationship you have.

Touching Heaven, Changing Earth
The House of God is the Gateway to Heaven
Gen. 28:10-22

– We are the house of God and the gateway
– Dysfuntional people change the workd, but dysfunctional Christians can’t change the world.
– God wants to use us to make a difference in our world. Ps. 24: 1,7
– Step up, reach out, and give what we’ve been given
– Wherever I am, I represent Christ, Rom. 5:18-19
– God wants me to give away what He’s given me

Qualities we need to have as representatives of Christ:
1. Loving: tender and benevolent (1 John 4:21)
  – most people respond to love, not criticism and judgement

2. Brave (1 Cor. 16:13-14)
  – we need to walk in courage, speaking the truth
  – not afraid to share our experiences Josh. 1:8-9, Ps. 27:14
  – People in our world need us to be strong and brave. When we are weak, God makes us strong

3. Generous
  – Jesus was all about others and wants us to be generous with our world Prov. 11:25, Mark 16:15

Steve Parsons – Building on the right foundation, Nov. 4, 2007

Ps. 66:2

  – When you set out to build something, it’s always harder than you think and it always takes longer than you think
  – All of us are building something with our life

1 Cor. 3:9-17
We’re going to build our lives…
1. build on the right foundation (v.11)
  – look at my life in the past week as an indicator to how I’m building my life.

2. check your motivation
  – They’re revealed by what you give your heart and life to
  – Gen. 11 – tower of babel, people were wanting to make a name for themselves and build themselves up.
  – Solomon – let’s build a temple that makes God look good
  – Am I building for God’s glory? or for my own?

3. understand your resources
  – What has God given me to build with?
  – Get on with what I’m doing

4. get God’s design
  – Every time God tells someone to build something, He gives them specific instructions on how.
