Finding Refuge in the Name of the Lord
Isa. 46:3-7, compare to Ps. 115:1-8 – We become like what we worship

“God is most glorified when we are most satisfied in Him.” John Piper

– Even in our western culture, we have idols like money, food, etc. and we tend to say that God is not enough, but God plus ________ is enough.
– I need to remember that God is all I need; God alone, and not God plus things or actions.

10. Jehova Mekoddishkem – The Lord sanctifies you and makes you holy
  – only used 2 times in the Old Testament. First in Exodus 31:13
  – the Lord who sees us apart, we are set apart for Him
  – whatever I do, even my work, I do to the glory of God because I’ve been set apart
  – all that I have: hands, feet, eyes, everything is been set apart for God

11. Jehovah Jireh – The Lord will provide
  – this name only occurs once in the Old Testament – Gen. 22:14

12. Jehovah Shalom – The Lord is peace
  – this name also only occurs once in the Old Testament – Judges 6:24
  – God wants to be your wholeness
  – our affirmation, identity, and wholeness can only come in God, not in others.

13. Jehovah Sabaoth – The Lord of hosts and power
  – first used in 1 Sam. 1:3
  – God rules over every army of the world
  – God can summon all the armies of the world to come to me if He wants
  – God says to cast all my fears on Him and tuned into Him
  – “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.” Isa. 26:3

14. El Olam – The everlasting God, the eternal God
  – first used in Gen. 21:33
  – the God of eternity and I will be with Him always

15. Elohim – God our judge and creator
  – first used in Gen. 1:1

16. Qanna – The jealous and zealous God
  – first used in Exodus 20:5
  – God is not jealous of me, He’s jealous for me

17. Jesus – Yahweh is salvation – He saves
  – Acts 4:8-12
  – God is Jehovah – the God who wants to be known
  – whatever name you use to call upon Him, He will come

7. Jehovah Rapha – The Lord that heals, restores, and makes healthful
  – first used in Exodus 15:26
  – God can heal instantly and he can heal progressively over time

8. Jehovah Shammah – The Lord is there
  – used only once in the Old Testament – Ezekiel 48:35

9. Jehovah Tsidkenu – The Lord is our righteousness
  – first used in Jer. 23:6

When I need a refuge, I run to God
– Prov. 18:10 “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
– Like a computer, we get viruses and fragmented and we run to God to stay clean and defragmented

4. Yahweh (YHWH) – Lord, Jehova – promised name of God
  – first used Gen. 2:4
  – Adonai is a common substitute for YHWH

5. Jehovah Nissi – the Lord my banner
  – first used in Exodus 17:15
  – God wants to be known, gives us hope and a focal point
  – when I run to God, God is in me, and I can help others run to God and raise His banner

6. Jehovah Raah – the Lord is my shepherd
  – Ps. 23
  – feeds and leads His people to pasture
  – also: the Lord my friend

– There’s already a spirit of antichrist that’s misleading many today (1 Cor. 4:4)

God’s names:
1. El Shaddai – all sufficient one, Lord God, Almighty
  – first used Gen. 17:1 “I am Almighty God…”
  – “El” means God “Shaddai” means almighty. Completely satisfying, nurturing, mountain of strength

2. El Elyon – most high God, most exhalted God
  – first used Gen. 14:18

3. Adonai – Lord, Master
  – first used Gen. 15:2, “But Abram said, “Adonai…”
  – plural is YHWH or Yahweh, or Jehovah
