Lord, Make Us Shine, Kirk Bowmen, June 29, 2008

Guest speaker: Pastor Kirk Bowmen

Lord, make us shine.
– The church is making a shift to be known what we’re for and what God is for instead of what we the church or God is against
 – John 3:17 God didn’t come to judge the world but to save it
– God is for you, not against you, He wants to bless you.

Isaiah 60:1-5
 – Today it seems like darkness is getting constantly deeper, BUT the church is growing constantly brighter.

How can we shine?
1. We have to rise up – arise
  – the word “arise” is in the Bible 156 times
  – life can cause us to fall, but we rise up
  – Prov. 24:16 – I’m going to live “up” and my attitude will be “up”

2. Walk in the light that you already have
  – I can live in my light/answers/certainty; or I can live in my darkness/questions/doubt

3. Carry the presence of God with us
  – The glory of the Lord is with us
  – Christians and non-christians both live life through all the trials, gas prices, etc. but the difference is that God is with us. He’s with me through everything.

4. See darkness as an opportunity to shine
  – it’s easier to shrink back and be safe, but now it’s more important than ever to shine.

5. People are drawn to light (Isa. 60:3)
  – people will go where there’s color, light, beauty, etc.

6. Get a fresh new vision (Isa. 60:4a)
  – you don’t see the world as it is, but as you are
  – 3 different people see the same thing 3 different ways
  – it’s all about my outlook – how do I see God? how do I see my Life? You will follow the vision that you see.

7. Grow your attraction factor (Isa. 60:4b)
  – people and children were drawn to Jesus, some Christians aren’t fun and attractive

8. Get an enthusiastic heart (Isa. 60:5a)
  – whatever I do, I do it with my whole heart
  – some Christians frown and still expect others to follow them
  – 2 Cor. 5:9, no matter what’s going on around me, I will continue to praise God and be up.

9. Get an abundance mentality (Isa. 60:5b)
  – there’s no lack with God
  – it’s easy to focus on the darkness, instead of the abundance of God
 – God is more than enough innovation, resources, creativity, etc.

10. Do all your shining for the glory of God
  – Matt. 5:14-16, you shine to glorify God
  – I can do anything with the help of God (Phil. 4:13)

Prov. 4:18-19, “The ways of right-living people glow with light; the longer they live, the brighter they shine. But the road of wrongdoing gets darker and darker – travelers can’t see a thing; they fall flat on their faces.” (The Message)

The Kingdom of God Pt 5, June 22, 2008

Mark 10:45 – I’m here to serve
Acts 1:1-3 Follow Jesus’ example. He taught and then did, never giving up until He was taken up to heaven
 – The Kingdom of God was Jesus’ message both before and after the cross.

Delegation and Demonstration
Gen. 1:26-28 – God delegated to man
Gen. 9:1-2 – Same delegation to Noah and his family
Gen. 17:1-6 – God comes to Abraham and makes a covenant that kings and nations will come from him.
 – as a Christian, I’ve been grafted into Abraham’s family and am a king and have dominion over evey my own body. I need to get out of a “victim” mentality and take responsibility for myself and my actions, making them line up with God.
Ps. 115:16 – David gets a promise
Matt. 9:35-38 – Jesus delegates

The devil and the carnal flesh actively work to keep us from the Kingdom of God so I’m to actively work to pursue and stay in the Kingdom of God
Matt. 10:5 – Jesus sent out men to go and give what they’ve received from Him
Acts 8:12-13 – delegation and demonstration
Matt 16:13-19 – we’ve been given authority/keys to bind and loose
 – “God is there something You want me to bind or loose in somone?”
 – Need to exercise in wisdom and grace the power to loose and bind
Matt. 12:22-30 – we’ve been given authority and are to exercise it
 – we’re called as delegates to go and train others

The Kingdom of God Pt 4, June 15, 2008

We need a mindset of the Kingdom of God, just like a radio is tuned into a certain station.

Matt. 11:12
 – We are to have an advancement in the Kingdom of God
 – Can’t be passive and inherit the Kingdom of God, Jesus wasn’t passive, and neither is the devil.

Acts 14:22 – as a Christian, we go through trials, there’s no way around it, but we keep a mindset of “midst” theology – Kingdom of God is in our midst.
John 20:21 – Jesus gives us His authority and commands us to go
Zeph. 3:17
John 7:37-38 “midst”
John 20:19 “midst”
 – If we don’t have a “midst” theology, we can get overwhelmed with fear
Phil.2:14-16 – in the “midst” of a crooked generation

A mindset of an age to come
 – Matt. 12:32
 – Eph. 1:15-21
 – Heb. 6:4-6

The Nature of the Kingdom of God Pt 2, June 8, 2008

Acts 1:1 – Jesus did things and taught things, we’re to follow His example, not just sit around being taught
– be both a doer and a teacher – I’ve been taught, now I need to go and do.

The Kingdom of God is visible but not physical
 – visible through our lives – Paul’s transformed life
 – gifts of the Spirit are visible manifestations of the Kingdom of God

The Kingdom of God is social and corporate
 – people think the church is for them individually, instead of serving and contributing in the church
 – my choices affect my family – the body of Christ
 – the church is where iron sharpens iron

The Kingdom of God is universal and local
 – “…and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

The Kingdom of God is mysterious
 – Matt. 13:1
 – Sowing is different from farming: farmers plant but the sower scatters seed
 – what you have that the Spirit gives you will be taken away if you don’t use it
 – the explanation of the parable of the sower really is seen in people’s lives today too.
 – v. 24-30 – even in the church there is both wheat and weeds. The weeds look like wheat. But it’s not our job to seek and pluck them out.

The Kingdom of God is ever expanding
 – Matt. 13:31-32 (parable of the mustard seed) & v. 33 (parable of the yeast)
 – there’s always more of God that I need, I’m never full or stuffed
 – the Kingdom of God is always expanding in our lives
 – have we discovered the value of the Kingdom of God? v. 44, 45-46
 – the treasure of God is very much worth me giving up everything to get it.

The Nature of the Kingdom of God, June 1, 2008

The Nature of the Kingdom of God
Acts 1:1-3

The nature is both present and future – The Kingdom of God is both now and in the future

It’s Imperative
– not to be taken lightly
– Jesus said to forgive others just as God forgave us and He gives us the power to forgive
– Kingdom of God is in our midst (Rom. 14:17)

The nature is spiritual and manifest in us as Christians (1 Cor. 2:4-5)
– be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18)
– people being taught of being filled with the Spirit (Acts 19)

The nature is Social and Corporate – not individualistic (1 Cor. 12:7)
– yes, you can get things for your spiritual growth from tv, radio, and the internet, but the body of Christ can’t benefit from you if you’re not also involved in your local church.
– Rom. 12:5-21
