The Thanksgiving Sacrifice, Nov 30, 2008

Leviticus 7:11-15
– first mention of thanksgiving in the Bible
– peace offering and thanksgiving
7 pictures or lessons from reading this passage in Leviticus

1. Teaches us about peace
  – picture of the peace we have with God
  – outward peace but also inward peace (Phil.4:6-7)
  – can’t have peace without being thankful (Col. 3:15)

2. It’s a multiple offering (v.12)
  – Give thanks always in everything to God (Eph. 5:20)

3. God takes our sin away
  – in the Bible, leven or yeast represents sin

4. The offering was heaved up to God, hands extended out to Him
  – we present our sinful selves before God in surrender
  – our words of thanksgiving go directly to God’s ears

5. The sacrifice of thanksgiving is sprinkled with the blood of the offering (v.14)
  – 2 Cor. 9:15

6. The peace sacrifice is the only one to be eaten together
  – Ps. 35:18
  – thanksgiving is to be shared with others, it brings people together

7. The sacrifice had to be eaten the same day it was offered
  – each day needs its own thanksgiving offering

John, Jesus, and the Jordan, Nov 16, 2008

Matt. 3:13-4:1

Luke 1:41-45 – Mary visits Elizabeth

– John and Jesus grew up. John was kind of a hippie – dressed and ate differently, but Jesus called him the greatest prophet.
– John drew large crowds, there was a revival in the land
– John saw Jesus and called out “Behold, the Lamb of God”. John knew that Jesus was going to die as a sacrifice that takes away the sins of the whole world – not just the Jews
– John says that Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit
– In Baptism, symbolically people go into the water dirty and come out clean. Jesus is baptized: goes in sinless, and comes out taking up the people’s sin
– After Jesus is baptized, the heavens are opened. When the heavens are opened, the invisible spiritual world becomes visible (the Holy Spirit comes like a dove)
– Jesus even said to people “your sins are forgiven” when they didn’t even ask for it.
