Take what you have learned and give it away, June 27, 2010

2 Tim. 2:1-2

– everybody used of God greatly has hurt greatly

House of David’s wives:
1. Michal – name means “who is like God” or “no one is like God”
  – 1 Sam. 18:27
  – we need to fix our eyes on God, not on a negative target, but the solution
  – Nehemiah was fixed on rebuilding the walls and avoided the negativity from people trying to distract him. (Nehemiah 4:1-6:14)

2. Abigail – name means “my father is joy” (1 Sam. 25:39)
  – never forget that our Father is joy
  – don’t let the opinions of men control you mor than the opinions of God

3. Bathsheba – name means “a daughter of a vow” (2 Sam. 11:26)
  – we need to re-marry our vows

– In the times of your greatest failure, get up, bury your past, marry the present and give birth to the future

Re-marry these truths:
1. there is no one like God, no one.

2. my Father is Joy – in His presence, there’s fullness of joy

3. my God is a vow-keeper, He keeps all His promises

Fatherhood: Honorable Fathers, Honorable Children, June 20, 2010

Deut. 5:16; Mark 7:5-13; Eph. 6:1-4

Ways fathers can become honorable:
1. Get to know God as Father
2. Give your children a sense of belonging, acceptance and identity
  – fathers like to give good gifts (James 1:17)
  – when we face the light, we leave our shadows behind us. If we turn our backs on the light, our shadows are in front of us and we chase them instead of God.
3. Embrace your children (like hugs)
4. Love your wife (Eph. 5:25)
  – your marriage and your children will blossom
5. Respect your child’s thoughts, feelings, and dreams
6. Keep your promises – builds trust
7. Encourage your children (Eph. 6:4)
8. Teach them the Word (Eph. 6:4; Prov. 22:6; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Heb. 12:6)

Honorable children:
1. Walk in forgiveness – allow God to show you what an awesome Father He is
2. Show respect – respect their position over you as parents
  – accept their discipline (Prov. 1:8-9; Col. 3:20)
  – teaches repect for authority (Rom. 13:1-2)
  – places you under God’s protection (Prov. 6:20-23)
3. Show appreciation and value (Prov. 23:26;31:28; Mal. 4:6)
4. Walking in the truth (1 John 3:14; 2 Tim. 3:1-2; Prov. 27:11)

Spring Cleaning: Chasing Away the Foxes, June 13, 2010

Song of Solomon 2:11-15
– most of us aren’t tripped up by the big foxes, it’s the little foxes that eat away at us and end up consuming us

Identifying the foxes:
1. Worry, cares, anxieties, fears (Matt. 6:19-34; 1 Peter 5:6-7; Phil. 4:6-7)

2. Insecurities
  – manifest as ultra-defensiveness, control, leagalistic, extreme shyness, hyper-sensitivity, acting out to get attention, extreme-comptetiveness, & false identity

3. Selfish ambitions – jealousies (James 3:13-16)

4. Wrong focus (Phil. 4:8; Matt. 13:22)

John 5:1-18

Bethesda – full of sick people

– don’t rush into things, be careful
– religion goes to things, we need to go to Jesus
– Jesus asks the man if he wants to be healed, some people don’t want to be healed
– when you get out of a bad thing, roll it up and never go back to it.
– everyone’s focus was on the water and none cried out to Jesus
– Jesus met the man later in the temple
– make your relationship with Jesus personal, not chasing after religion
– do you want to be well? Just receive Jesus’ free gift of life eternal
– Jesus isn’t in some country or far away place, He stands at the door to your heart and knocks
– decide today to have Jesus
– Jesus wants to heal everyone that’s sick
