Mountain Takers Get The Girl, Kirk Bowman, June 19, 2011

“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves” Edward Hillary
Joshua 14:10-12 – Caleb holds on to God’s promise for 45 years
Joshua 15:13-19

How God helps us take our mountains:
1. the mountain was given but it had to be taken
  – God gives but we have to take
  – you don’t just have something, you stretch yourself to become something
2. mountain takers inspire and attract other mountain takers
  – Caleb broke through so Otheniel to take his mountain too
  – it opens doors for others to do the same
3. mountain takers get the girl
  – Othniel takes the city and gets the girl
  – 1 Sam. 18:25-27
  – if you want something great, you need to become a mountain taker
4. we need fathers and sons who will take their mountains
  – fathers show that a long staisfying marriage is possible
  – fathers show that a strong, long-term commitment is possible
  – sons need to break through, they’re the next generation fathers
  – fathers give their shoulders to their sons to stand on and go farther
5. shout “grace, grace to your mountain” (Zech. 4:7)
  – your mountain will become your plain to walk on
  – our God is a God of grace
  – shout to your mountain, don’t just talk about it.

My Mouth – There It Goes Again, June 12, 2011

James 1:19, 26; James 3:1-12; James 4:11-15,5:12

– guarding your mouth – how’s it going?
– the tongue: a bit – small but controlling, a rudder – extremely influential, a raging fire – dangerously destructive, a wild animal – difficult to tame, a spring – either bitter or sweet, a fruit – either one kind or another
Matt 12:36-37, Prov. 18:21, Luke 6:45
– words have many abilities: to communicate knowledge, to inspire action, to calm the fearful, to encourage the depressed, to express anger, to display beauty with words that paint a picture
– words are one thing that once you let them go, you can never get them back
– words can destroy a relationship, they can end a career, and they can ruin a reputation
– words can build someone up or tear somebody down
– Challenges:
  1. I will speak to people, not about them, unless it is to praise or uplift them
  2. I will not voice my opinion about everything
  3. choose well what you say
  4. think before you speak (Col. 4:6, Prov. 13:3)
THINK – (T) is it true? (H) is it helpful? (I) is it inspiring? (N) is it necessary? (K) is it kind?
  5. choose the new man (Col. 3:9-10)
– old man or new man? James 1:19
– listen before you speak
– 2 great prayers: Ps. 19:14 and Ps 144:3

Drop Your Camera, Lend a Hand, June 5, 2011

– the problem with pictures is that you see things from a distance
– can’t experience what’s in a picture
– quit looking at life from a safe distance, like through a camera
James 1:19-27 (let your defenses down v.19)
– true faith is demonstrated in how you live your life.
– v. 22 do what the Bible says, put down your camera/excuse for not obeying God

Personal reflections:
– faith without works is dead (who’s in charge of your life? Fear or God?)
– everyone is a minister (1 Perter 4:10) – there is no unemployment in the Kingdom of God. Just serve with what you have right now.
– am I numb to the warnings? Especially the warnings about your life from God?
– am I truly working for what matters? Luke 12:13-21 (am I working hard for something that can turn to rubble in a second?)
– ministry of Jesus is not that complicated (Acts 10:38)
